The Red Turtle ⭐⭐⭐⭐ 1/2

A man is ship-wrecked on  a desert island and finds his attempts to escape are thwarted by a large red turtle.

To say more would spoil the wonders of Michaël Dudok de Wit‘s moving and enigmatic animated fantasy.

This is striking piece of work aimed squarely at adults, combining stunning visuals with a simple story, which is open to interpretation.

I suspect that this Studio Ghibli production wont be everyone’s cup of tea; it sits firmly in the ” art house” category and the narrative layers of the material on offer may prove frustrating for some viewers.

But I found its simplicity, both in form and narrative, hypnotic and very moving.

When all is said and done, this is a masterpiece. Highly recommended.
