Like “Loving”, this is a period piece dealing with segregation – this time in the Sixties – and fascinatingly during the Space Race.
The untold story of three black American women who worked in an unwelcoming NASA, yet made a significant contribution to the Space Programme- this is a charming movie.
You can almost hear the pitch – ‘The Help’ meets the ‘The Right Stuff’! – but this is helped by three very strong and likeable central performances by Taraji P. Henson, Octavia Spencer and Janelle Monae. And how great it is to see Kevin Costner displaying his much missed star power.
When all is said and done, this is a ‘feel good movie’; a different take on the subject might have resulted in more dramatic and substantial material on screen.
But on occasion it’s just too easy to be dismissive of well-crafted Hollywood product.
This Subtitled Friend had an excellent, entertaining and informative time at the movies.
