Manchester by the Sea

5 out of 5 Stars

A  heartbreaking study of grief, guilt and loss, boasting an astonishing, Oscar-worthy lead performance by Casey Affleck.

Lee Chandler (Affleck) returns to his hometown, the titular Manchester, after the death of his brother Joe to find that he has been appointed guardian to his 16 year-old nephew. In a lesser film, what could have then followed would have been the cliched man comes to peace with himself and finds love through caring for his orphaned nephew. But – and spoiler alert! – instead of offering this redemptive arc the film is a lot more realistic and ultimately more satisfying.

    1. I could have lauded more praises but wanted to keep the rv short. The other performances, the stillness of Casey Affleck’s performance, the use of music, editing (both sound and film) …

      Remarkable indeed.
