Elvis and Nixon ⭐️⭐️1/2

An intriguing enough idea for a film and one I had looked forward to seeing but sadly, I feel shortchanged after viewing. It isn’t because the actual meeting lasted no more than maybe a third of the running time of the film or that the performances of Michael Shannon (who is more Elvis in spirit than looks) and Kevin Spacey (is there any role this man cannot do well?) are not good – in fact, they are pretty convincing and watchable. My problem is that the meeting itself, and the film as a whole, seems rather insignificant and pointless. We don’t learn anything new about them either before or after this meeting that we don’t know of already. In the end, the meeting of two iconic and contrasting figures turns out to be a bit of an anticlimactic non-event.
