Trespass Against Us **1/2

2.5 out of 5 stars

A crime family drama set in the West Counties in England, this is the familiar story of how Michael Fassbender’s character tries to do right for his wife and children and escape from under the influence and control of his criminal father played by Brendan Gleason. What stand out for me are some well-staged and energetically shot car chase scenes, but otherwise, it is rather soapy and tonally uneven; and the ending lacks both an emotional and a narrative payoff. Perhaps I was filmed out after 16 films in 10 days but this one doesn’t really leave much of an impression despite fine performances by Fassbender, Gleason and Lyndsey Marshal who plays Fassbender’s long suffering wife.
