Frantz

Four out of  five stars.

Another film festival, another Francois Ozon movie. Prolific and never predictable, Ozon’s films are always interesting.

Here between the World Wars a mysterious visitor to the grave of a German  soldier stirs up new  feelings for the soldier’s fiancee and his parents.

This is is sweeping movie, both dramatic and on occasion moving. Characters have real depth, the plot develops slowly but unpredictably. Strong, at times almost Hitchcockian, direction holds your attention at all times.

Excellent cinematography and a beautiful music score combine with a stand out central performance from Paula Beer.

I was engrossed. Highly recommended.
