Star Trek Revisited

32f22d04860103e3ca6987a1552afa9cfc6cbfdfNot the latest addition to the much-loved franchise, but rather my re-examination of the ten movies pre-reboot on shiny discs. Cards on the table here … I love Trek! I love its characters, its humour, its optimism for a better future. Heck, I even love its cheesiness and the old wobbly sets of the original series. But whilst I approach this evaluation from a  biased viewpoint, I have tried to retain some objectivity and recognise that a few of these movies are really not that good.

So , lets make it so …

#10 Star Trek: The Final Frontier – 1.5 out of 5 stars

The one where they seek God

Bombastic and pretentious with dire special effects. Makes you wonder where the film’s budget went.

#9 Star Trek: The Motion Picture – 2 out of 5 stars

The Motionless Picture

So ….. slow ……. Press fast forward and view at warp speed.

#8 Star Trek Insurrection – 2.5 out of 5 stars

The one where Riker shaves off his beard

or … the one where Riker and Troy share a bubble bath (eeuw!!)

Inoffensive, but its lack of scale and ambition makes it feel like a long Next Gen tv episode

#7 Star Trek Nemesis – – 2.5 out of 5 stars

The one with the Romulans

High point – Tom Hardy as the baddie. Low point – the psychic rape of Deanna Troy. Was that really necessary?

#6 Star Trek Generations – 3 out of 5 stars

The one with the horses

Passing the baton from OS to NG but somewhat forgettable

#5 Star Trek III: The Search for Spock – 3 out of 5 stars

The one where The Enterprise is destroyed. Again.

Essentially a bridging film between TWOK and the one with the whales.

#4 Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country – 3.5 out of 5 stars

The one with the Klingons

Not to be confused with ST III. With a great turn by Christopher Plummer as the key baddie

#3 Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home- 4 out of 5 stars

The one with the whales

Great character moments with many memorable lines

#2 Star Trek  First Contact – 4 out of 5 stars

The one with The Borg.

Easily the best of the Next gen movies, although that’s not saying much

#1 Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan – 5 out of 5 stars

Not just a great ST movie but a great movie.

I urge you to read Bazza’s excellent review.
