The Pixar-fication of Disney animation continues aplomb in their latest potential franchise maker. Take an adult genre – in this case, the buddy cop movie – and make it kids friendly but not patronising. Throw in (more than) a few funny and inspired gags that the grown-ups will appreciate – here, the Godfather references and various puntastic jokes – and then make it as visually luscious and colourful as possible and you get the formula for a rewarding (both financial and emotionally) family entertainment that plays to crowds both young and old. The plotting may be simple and at times, predictable (I blame the cynical adult in me who’s far too well-versed in genre movies) but the smart script is also thankfully layered with subtexts that convey worthy messages of tolerance and self-confidence, in and amongst the fun and entertaining adventures, for the young ones which elevates it above your average cartoon feature.
