Three out of five stars.
I was pretty hostile to the 2005 movie with Judi Dench and the late Bob Hoskins – largely because it was a very disappointing choice for that year’s Surprise Film at the London Film Festival.
But hey, good reviews for its initial run in Bath lured the Subtitled Friends in for this new musical version put together by the very reliable Terry Johnson.
What they’ve achieved is a sweet, well natured but also very traditional show. Pretty faithful to the source material – which I’m afraid may be pretty unfathomable to a tourist audience – our silver haired bunch appeared to lap up a mix of musical styles and bawdy gags.
But for me it wasn’t enough. Despite a worthy effort from a good cast, it just didn’t click despite its many charms.
It may tell a tale of showbiz survival, but my gut is this won’t be a show that never closes.
