Son of Saul

2.5 out of 5 stars

A front runner for Best Foreign Language Film at this year’s Oscars but I would like to nominate it for an alternative, new category … ‘Artistically worthy but not enjoyable’. A tough watch, not only in terms of the subject matter – set in Auschwitz at the end of WWII – but also because of the way it was filmed.  Think tight framing throughout, the camera rarely leaving the protagonist, with shallow depth of field. Whilst this was an effective way of conveying the horrors of the camp without graphic detail, it resulted in an uncomfortable immersive experience. For me, it was an experience from which I was glad to escape.
