Trumbo

3.5 out of 5 stars

A very likeable film, especially for cineastes and fans of 50s Hollywood (take ½ star off my rating if you aren’t one), anchored by a magnificent turn by Bryan Cranston as Dalton Trumbo and very ably supported by an ensemble cast, in particular Helen Mirren and Michael Stuhlbarg. While it competently captures a shameful but important period in Cinema History, the script is a little too neat and too safe.  It is satisfying but you never feel like you are watching a great movie, just one that perhaps Trumbo himself would have made during his King Bros days.
