Four our of five stars.
A thoroughly entertaining and dramatic dive into the world of CDOs and sub-prime mortgages adapted from Michael Lewis’s book.
The material may sound snooze-worthy, but a great script and direction means that director and co-screenwriter Adam McKay explores all manner of techniques to ensure complicated financial terms are explained well. Think – asides to camera, jump cuts, monologues – all seamlessly integrated into a fascinating exploration of what is effectively global economic collapse.
And good performances too from Christian Bale, Steve Carrell and a great ensemble cast.
So please don’t be put off by the subject matter, this is a top-notch ‘heist’ movie – with the world economy at stake.
