The Force is strong with this one.
I was grinning my way through much of the running time of the new Star Wars movie. And if I wasn’t grinning, I was gasping. And if I wasn’t gasping, I was crying.
J.J. Abrams and the folks at Disney have produced a lovingly crafted movie which is part tribute to the original 1977 blockbuster and part restart. It does this by deftly introducing a trio of winning new characters – hats off to Daisy Ridley, John Boyega and Oscar Isaac who are all delightful – whilst ensuring that old favourites Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher and Mark Hamill all have their own defining moments on screen.
And Adam Driver makes an effective new villain as the masked Kylo Ren.
Thrilling effects work never swamps simple, but effective storytelling and an outstanding warm and funny script.
I appreciate that on occasion it follows the plot and indeed emotional beats of the original trilogy perhaps a little too closely, but this ain’t no Star Wars Karaoke.
And this review is not Attack of the Moans. This is breathtaking stuff.
You know what. I am still grinning.
May the Force be with you. Always.
