Four out of five stars
Part of the great LOVE season at BFI Southbank, CinemaScope soppy romance doesn’t come better than this 1957 tear jearker.
Immortalised for the modern audience by Sleepless in Seattle, this tale of two lovers already in relationships agreeing to meet 6 months later at the the top of the Empire State Building is full of surprising wit and charm, largely due to two wonderful star performances from Carey Grant and Deborah Kerr. And great direction from Leo McCarey. Note the subtle use of reflections throughout the film.
Ok, I could have done without the singing kids. But by that point I was enchanted.
And by the movie’s ending genuinely moved.
