Three and a half out of five stars.
Enjoyable gangster film in the tradition of Scarface.
So queue the dodgy hairstyles and sideburns topped off by some pretty brutal scenes – you’re never five minutes away from your next shooting.
But entertaining as it is, Black Mass lacks the panache of a Goodfellas. Sure Johnny Depp’s performance as real life criminal James “Whitey” Bulger is startling, but it often seems like a caricature – as if he’d stepped out of ‘Dick Tracy’.
Ultimately I was more impressed by Joel Edgerton’s turn as FBI agent John Connolly, who along with a good supporting cast, grounds the film in the reality of this true story of the criminal underworld.
