A 3D musical based on the romantic and professional rivalries in a big corporation set against the 2008’s stock market crisis. The resulting film is an ambitious and interesting challenge but not a total success. The best thing here is the lavish set design and production which, quoting another reviewer as I cannot put it any better myself, is Bertolt Brecht by way of Baz Luhrmann. The music, on the other hand, is Cantopop with a dash of Andrew Lloyd Webber. While the performances are mostly fine and the direction is fluid and competent, it is the scripting that sometimes comes unstuck: the romances are predictable, bordering on cliché, and the main story about greed, a bit too obvious. The 2 hours flew by but the film, like the colour-saturated and shiny sets are great to look at but ultimately fairly forgettable.
