Four stars

Fred (Michael Caine) and Mick (Harvey Keitel) are two old friends holidaying in the Alps. While Fred is a retired conductor, Mick is still working in his next film project.

And so like some kind of art house Last of the Summer Wine, the pair ruminate on life, their careers, past loves and family as they wander through stunning Alpine scenery.

But don’t worry, this is no Sunday night sitcom but the latest – and indeed brilliant film – from Paolo Sorrentino, director of the Great Beauty.

I’ll have to admit I always had mixed feelings about ‘Beauty’. But I loved Youth despite the odd niggle. It’s a wonderfully cinematic and often very funny look at the process of aging with a great supporting cast including Rachel Weiz and Jane Fonda. And an  Oscar-worthy turn from Mr Caine.

Stay and watch those closing credits in silence.

That’s what my LFF audience did.
Just magical.
