Take Me to the River

Beautifully shot, meandering pacing and mystifying motivations and unexplained behaviour by characters that you are supposed to feel for but leave you shrugging as you exit the cinema instead – welcome to another US indie drama, as yet another family reunion turned introspective in rural/red-necked Nebraska when the sister returns from California with her liberal husband and gay son! The film dances around the delicate themes of blossoming sexuality and repressed family secrets by coyly hinting and ambiguous plotting but lacks the conviction to make its points clearly.
