From Afar (Desde Allá – Venezuela

An older closeted gay man develops an unusual/dangerous relationship with one of the street boys he becomes obsessed with – this has potential to be an interesting piece of drama and it must have been for the judges in the Venice Film Festival to give it their top prize; but for me, the film is slow, disjointed and incoherent with an ending that is both frustrating and baffling. Is the film trying to say that money can buy you love? Or is it a statement that persistency and madness will eventually prevail? It is the nonsensical ideologies behind the film that I ultimately find most disappointing.

  1. So PatronWong and fellow Subtitled Friend, a disagreement on this one.

I was drawn in by the cinematography and great performances. Admittedly the conclusion has its issues on closer post-movie analysis but there is much to discuss.

    “Nonsensical ideologies”? No way.

    3 and a half stars.
