Closet Monster

Another gay coming of age story but this one distinguishes and elevates itself with an assured script mixing the usual elements you’ll find in this genre with metaphorical body gore ripped from early David Cronenberg movies and a talking hamster voiced by Isabella Rossillini. If this sounds too surreal or pretentious but thankfully it works as narrative devices, drawing out the inner thoughts and conflicts our teenage protagonist is experiencing. It also helps that the characters (and the actors playing them) are likeable and the organic storylines feel realistic and convincing. Worth checking out when it arrives on Netflix in 6 months’ time.
